Cartier, Crystallization of Time

Unraveling the stories of gems as crystallized moments in time

OVERVIEW

We were in charge of the planning and production of the official website and digital handout for the Cartier exhibition, “Cartier, Crystallization of Time,” held at Seoul’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in 2024. This exhibition, with the concept of “crystallization of time,” showcased around 300 pieces focusing on works from the 1970s onward. Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida’s New Material Research Laboratory designed a multi-chapter spatial composition that blended traditional materials with modern technology, expressing Cartier’s creativity and timeless beauty.

To give visitors a deeper experience of the exhibition, we designed optimal experiences for both before and during their visit. For the website, we took an editorial approach with visuals and text that glow beautifully in the dark, communicating the concepts of the exhibition space and the artworks. We aimed to unravel the stories behind the works with words, building anticipation and understanding before the visit.

For the digital handout, created to complement the in-person experience, we adhered to the policy of not placing captions in the gallery. We built an environment where visitors could comfortably view information on all 300 works on their smartphones, utilizing a web-specific hierarchical structure and interactive features. We successfully created a seamless integration between the physical exhibition space and the digital experience, allowing us to convey Cartier’s world from multiple perspectives.
